Blocked Toilet? What to Try Before You Call a Plumber

A blocked toilet is one of those problems that always seems to happen at the worst possible time. The good news is that a lot of blockages clear with a few simple steps — and knowing which ones are safe to try yourself can save you a call-out.

First, stop it overflowing

If the bowl is filling and looks like it might spill, take the lid off the cistern and push the flapper (the rubber seal at the bottom) down by hand to stop more water entering. Then turn off the small isolation tap on the wall behind the toilet. That buys you time to deal with the blockage calmly.

What’s safe to try at home

• A proper plunger. Use a flange plunger (the type with a rubber sleeve that fits into the bowl outlet). Cover the outlet fully, then push and pull firmly a dozen times. The pull is as important as the push.
• Hot water and dishwashing liquid. A squirt of detergent followed by a bucket of hot — not boiling — water can soften and shift a soft blockage. Boiling water can crack the porcelain, so keep it just off the boil.
• Wait it out. For a partial blockage, leaving it for an hour sometimes lets the obstruction break down enough to flush away.

Avoid chemical drain cleaners in toilets. They’re often ineffective on the kind of blockages toilets get, and they can damage seals and pipework — and they make the job more hazardous if a plumber does need to get involved.

When to call a plumber

Some signs point to a problem further down the line that a plunger won’t fix:

• More than one fixture is affected — the toilet gurgles when you run the shower or empty the sink.
• The blockage keeps coming back within days.
• Water or sewage is backing up into the shower or floor waste.
• There’s a sewage smell in the yard or around the drains outside.

Those usually mean the blockage is in the main sewer line — often tree roots or a collapsed section — and that needs a CCTV camera and proper drain machine to diagnose and clear. It’s not a DIY job, and putting it off tends to make it worse.
